Latitude etc

Google Latitude

Google Latitude will be retired on August 9th, 2013. Products being retired include Google Latitude in Google Maps for Android, Latitude for iPhone, the Latitude API, the public badge, the iGoogle Gadget, and the Latitude website at maps.google.com/latitude.

So Google bids farewell to another service. It likely wasn't as widely used as something like Google Reader (wild stab in the dark here since I've never used it), but there certainly already are quite a few casualties strewn by the wayside like the aforementioned Reader earlier this month. I guess the only thing to really say is another one bites the dust.

Reading this article by Michael Mace does help put some of it into perspective though, I guess, even if we are all just speculating in the end. Their seemingly callous disregard now kind of has some logic behind it, but it certainly is a PR nightmare with the services constantly retiring and renaming themselves - essentially. It's a good enough strategy to have, to try a little of everything, but constantly closing down services and funneling features of them into other services will probably cause quite a lack of faith... if everything else they did already didn't? But that's just one opinion, and there are plenty more of them on the internet.

Just kind of hoping now someone will make me a comprehensive list of things Google has closed down, or I could just rely on trusty Wikipedia to have one already.
