June 4 六四

Pillar of Shame, by Jens Galschiot displayed at Hong Kong University

June 4 marks a significant day for Chinese people. Personally I'm not altogether with more modern Chinese history, so I have to be repeatedly reminded why it's important, but it marks another anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests/massacre from 1989. I remember the most iconic image from the event, Tank Man, but it seems like I've forgotten what happened if we ever did it in history class. Should read that Wiki page.

The above image is of 'Pillar of Shame' by a Danish sculptor, Jens Galschiot. This one is the one displayed at Hong Kong University, which I saw when we visited my dad's alma mater in January. It was quite... scary to see, especially up close.
