[Japanese] Grateful Kenshin

Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno image

One of my favourite recent Japanese phrases recently stems from the Rurouni Kenshin live action films that Seb, Ruben and I went to watch last month.

What’s this phrase? It’s Kenshin’s alternative to ‘arigatou’.

忝い 「かたじけない」

Meaning: ‘grateful, indebted’.

In a way this suit’s Kenshin’s personality a whole lot better, his humbleness despite his prowess. I haven’t watched that much of the anime to say, but I don’t recall hearing this phrase before the Kenshin movies so I don’t feel as though it has been used before. Having only read the manga in English also, I wonder if this has ever appeared.

Now that I know this phrase now though, it feels like a worthy replacement for the commonplace ‘arigato’; but that’s not really the right way to use this phrase now… is it?
