Revisiting: Garfield minus Garfield

Garfield Minus Garfield: Jon drinks coffee on his own

Sometimes I forget this place exists, then I come back and there is nothing but endless confusion and joy to be had. I think this qualifies as schadenfreude when this comic is about “the mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness and depression in a quiet American suburb”.

In other news, I never thought of Garfield as American although he must of course be. I spent most of my life between several suburbs, enough to qualify as a small town girl eager to see the world. While there were definitely places on the globe I was aware of such as the obvious ones of America and Europe, while reading a lot of media I tended to set them either outside our universe or feel as though they could have been in the suburb over.

Now and then if I have an existential crisis, it might help to come and see Jon’s plight instead. Might be inspirational.
