A Short Overview of the New Anime Season

Originally from http://oshibanashiori.wordpress.com

So it's that time of the year again, Fal- No, wait. We're not in the States here. This is the Southern Hemisphere. The season is Spring, and with it brings a whole new season of anime, while still trailing the ongoing ones from the old.

Come to think of it, most animes are made to weather a full season, and then make way for new ones. 26 or so episodes later, we make the shift from Winter to Spring, Spring to Summer and so the cycle continues. The luckier ones get a second season, the less lucky ones will continue on in the background with their small (or large) fanbase, waiting for the day they may eventually have the chance to witness another season.

So I thought now would be a good time as any to have an overview of just what I am trying vainly to keep up with this quarter. A list, no more, no less. Well, maybe we'll have some one-liners if I can muster up the brainpower to summarise them that succinctly. As if they haven't been reviewed and summarised a thousand times already, this is a quick and honest digest if you will:

  • Mawaru Penguindrum (carry on from last season) Penguins, penguins, penguins.
  • SKET Dance (carry on from last season) A school club who call themselves the 'SKET Dan' dedicate themselves to helping out any students in need, no matter what the task. Likened to Gintama.
  • Guilty Crown A suspicious mix of Code Geass and Dantalian no Shoka featuring characters from [C]. Pulling weapons out of people in public (sometimes).
  • Mirai Nikki People with unique advantages, their 'future diaries', trying to eliminate each other. Somewhat reminiscent of Eden of the East, but less messing with the economy and more messing with time.
  • Sekaiichi Hatsukoi Season 2 A continuation from season 1, basically BL in the setting of a shoujo magazine publication team, with references back to Junjou Romantica.
  • UN-GO Strange detective series where at the end of each episode, the mystery is solved but covered up. Worth watching for Inga if you like him/her.
  • Fate/Zero A prequel of Fate/Stay Night of sorts. Saber. Saberrrr.
  • Ben-To The fight for half-priced bento is a matter of pride and honour. Remember it. This is Srs Bznz.
  • Phi Brain: Kami no Puzzle Puzzles and more puzzles, although you're never sure how the puzzle is solved, just that it was because this guy is good at solving puzzles. Often called out to solve special 'sage puzzles' that are intruded on by other puzzle solvers with titles.
  • Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai! Hentai harem anime with lots of fighting.

And ones I've downloaded but not gotten to:

  • Persona 4
  • Kimi to Boku
  • Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing
  • C3: Cube x Cursed x Curious

Ones I'm still interested in looking into:

  • Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai
  • Maken-ki!
  • Chihayafuru
  • Chibi Devi

All in all, I've probably bitten off more than I can chew, but in the end, we'll see how it goes. Some are definite keepers, but some will either weather it, or will be left to lag behind, unfortunately, as more temporal matters take precedence.

(On another note though, where is spring? Summer seems to have jumped the gun this year.)
